PPG Strategy 2020 21

The Pupil Premium Grant is additional funding received by schools for each pupil eligible for free school meals. It’s important to know that a pupil does not need to have a school dinner, but the parents/ carers must have applied and be entitled if they wanted one.

It also includes:

  • pupils who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years
  • children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months
  • Principles
  • This money is for schools to decide how to use but should be spent in order to improve educational attainment of children from less privileged backgrounds. This is one of the government’s key education policies. It is based on findings that show that, as a group, children who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in time have consistently lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible for FSM.
  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils.
  • We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of eligible pupils are adequately assessed and addressed.
  • In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.
  • We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged or vulnerable to academic failure; that said funding streams must have impact on the achievement of FSM children, as part of larger groups.
  • Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time, but our Waved approach, in particular WAVE 2/3 will support the pupils to achieve the highest possible results.
  • The staff are aware of which children are eligible for the pupil premium and provide additional, continuous targeted support for those pupils.


The range of provision the school may consider making for this group could include:

  • Providing small group work with an experienced teacher focussed on overcoming gaps in learning or 1:1 support.
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities provided through learning mentors, trained TAs or external agencies.
  • All our work through the pupil premium will be aimed at accelerating progress moving children to at least age related expectations. Initially this will be in English and Maths.
  • Pupil premium resources may also be used to target able children on FSM.
  • Providing first hand experiences.
  • Continued professional development and specific intervention and training.
  • Additionally, these pupils are encouraged to take up after-school clubs, music tuition and other activities which enrich a pupil’s experience of school and can often turn them on to more learning.
  • Running a school breakfast club to improve attendance
  • Funding educational trips and visits
  • Funding English classes for children who speak another language at home
  • Investing in resources that boost children’s learning, such as laptops or tablets

Children qualify for free school meals – and accordingly pupil premium – if you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal credit (provided you have a net income of £7400 or less)
  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseekers allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of state pension credit
  • Child tax credit, provided that you are not entitled to working tax credit and have an annual gross income of £16190 or less


It will be the responsibility of the Headteacher, or a delegated member of staff, to

  • produce regular reports for the Governors on:
  • the progress made towards narrowing the gap, by year group, for eligible pupils
  • an outline of the provision that was made since the last meeting
  • an evaluation of the cost effectiveness, in terms of the progress made by the pupils receiving a particular provision, when compared with other forms of support.
