Phonics at St Gregory’s
Our children are involved in phonics lessons following the letters and sound scheme which is part of their reading and writing development.
What is phonics?
There has been a huge shift in the past few year in how we teach reading in UK schools. This is having a big impact and helping many children learn to read and spell. Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them learn to read. It runs alongside other teaching methods such as Guided Reading and Shared Reading to help children develop all the other vital reading skills and hopefully give them a real love of reading.

Reading Key stage 1
Our children follow a reading scheme that includes a variety of different types of reading books from various publishers such as, Oxford Reading Tree, Bug Club and Rigby Star. This ensures that they have access to a wide range of text. We are starting the use of book band levels. Please help your child by reading at home as often as possible.
