The Department of Education have recently reinforced the need to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty,  mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated more recently.

St Gregory’s is a Roman Catholic primary school that recognises the importance of teaching British Values throughout the school, this is done through a variety of ways including: assemblies, the curriculum, school visits, school and classroom ethos.

DEMOCRACY

Our School Council is an vital part of life at St Gregory’s and plays an essential part in school improvement. Annual elections are held, two children are nominated per class to stand for each position. They canvass for votes within their own class, the class vote based on the candidates campaign. We listen very carefully to school council ideas and will try to action them if possible.

We also have a very active PTA who help us to act upon ideas from our parents as well as the children; working together we aim to resolve any worries, concerns and make school improvements.

THE RULE OF LAW

The importance of laws whether they are class rules, school rules or UK laws are consistently reinforced throughout the school day, when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Each class are involved in developing their own set of “rules” this enables pupils to engage in how decisions and laws come about under a democratic system.

Pupils are taught the value and reason behind the laws that govern and protect us, the responsibility that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Specific roles in society relating to the rule of law are explored in various year groups. They explore the role of police officers and their dogs and have had school visits from the prison service. They have taken part in a  courtroom role play to give them an understanding of what happens.

 

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

At St Gregory’s, children are encouraged to make their own choices knowing they are in a safe, supportive and caring environment.
Pupils are encouraged to recognise, understand and action their personal freedoms and rights through online safety lessons, assemblies and the curriculum.

 

MUTUAL RESPECT

Awareness of others and mutual respect are key ingredients at St Gregory’s, children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and the rights of others. All members of our school family are expected to treat each other respectfully and have an awareness of the people around them.  Staff are expected to be good role models by setting good examples, listening to and respecting the children’s ideas and opinions.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS

At St Gregory’s we would challenge any pupil, parent or staff member for  expressing opinions we as a school felt were contrary to fundamental British Values, including extremist views. We embrace individuality, differing faiths and beliefs, we feel it greatly benefits our school and widens our horizons, it gives us an insight into other people’s cultures and enables us to share our differences and similarities.
